In this episode I interview fanfiction writer Gingerswag about her Supernatural fics ‘Keeping You In Sight’ and the ‘Wander Home’ series. We celebrate her recent grad school graduation, and Gingerswag shares how a friend first introduced her to the wonderful world of fanfiction. She voraciously consumed Harry Potter fics on FFN, but didn’t start writing creatively until after high school. Her very first fanfiction project was ‘Keeping You In Sight.’ Gingerswag explains that her goal with this story was to challenge subtle dependency tropes commonly found in slavefic AU and hurt/comfort stories. We discuss the sibling dynamic between Dean and Sam, and explore her story’s themes of dependency versus autonomy, self-actualization, boundaries, and love. Gingerswag recalls posting the last chapter of that project the week she started grad school, and over the next few years of study she started writing her ‘Wander Home’ series, which she describes as a tropey fluff project. ChaosBlue reads out some of her favorite metaphors from ‘Wander Home,’ and Gingerswag shares her writing process for both stories. When asked what makes fanfiction unique and special, she says her favorite thing about it is fanfiction’s freedom from corporate oversight and its ability to make powerful connections with readers.
