In this episode I interview fanfiction writer Chickenpets about her Harry Potter fic series called ‘Pacify.’ This massive Snarry series is currently 7 parts long (and counting) and has surpassed 600k words.
Chickenpets shares how her parents encouraged her love of reading, and how they took her to the midnight bookstore releases for Harry Potter as a kid. She remembers discovering fanfiction on FFN and then branching out to various HP fic archives that were active in the 2000s.
We talk about our mutual love for Severus Snape, and Chickenpets points out some very poignant reasons why his character remains such an interesting (if not controversial) character in canon. She explains how base similarities between Harry Potter and Severus Snape make them such a compelling and satisfying pairing.
We discuss themes of trauma, trust, and love in her series, and Chickenpets shares how she leans in to controversial topics and uses them as dynamic plot devises. She shares what she’s learned while writing this big project and says that connection and encouragement from the community are what save us. She reminds us how important it is not to shy away from our own work if we want to improve it, and that it’s okay to sit in the discomfort of confronting ourselves as evolving artists.
Thank you for coming on the show, Chickenpets!
Keep on rollin’!
