In this episode I interview fanfiction writer Priestess_of_Groove about her Game of Thrones fanfiction story ‘The Dragon’s Roar.’
PoG admits she doesn’t remember how she discovered fanfiction exactly, but knows she started reading and writing fic around the age of 12 or 13. Her first fandom experience was with Brian Jacques’ Redwall series which she was involved with for quite some time in the 2000s.
PoG talks about how she got involved with reading the Game of Thrones books and watching the GoT TV series, and ChaosBlue shares her list of salty grievances with GoT’s season 8.
PoG shares how ‘The Dragon’s Roar’ started out as a NaNoWriMo challenge and then grew from there into a massive multi-year 100+ chapter project that she anticipates will take another year to finish. We talk about the story’s unique variance with Jaime Lannister’s character, the interesting dynamic between Jaime and Jon Snow (also known as Aemon in this fic) and we discuss the fic’s subtle theme of choice versus fate.
PoG talks about the writing guide she created and posted to AO3 this year, reminisces about how TDR has changed her life and writing habits, and then gives us some of the best writing lessons she’s picked up over the last 20 years. PoG reminds us how important it is to have faith in ourselves and our plans.
